Ashwagandha for Stress: What the Research Actually Shows

During an especially stressful period of teaching, I took ashwagandha for three months. Did my cortisol go down? Here’s both the personal experience and what the research shows [1].

What Is Ashwagandha?

Scientific name: Withania somnifera. An herb used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years. Modern research classifies it as an adaptogen — a substance that increases the body’s resistance to stress [1]. Unlike stimulants, adaptogens work by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis — the hormonal cascade that governs the stress response. Ashwagandha appears to reduce the sensitivity of this system to perceived stressors, lowering baseline cortisol without blunting the acute stress response needed for performance.
