The Working Memory Bottleneck
Your brain processes information in two broad stages. Long-term memory holds everything you have ever learned — essentially unlimited in capacity. Working memory, on the other hand, is where active thinking happens, and it is shockingly small.
The classic study by George Miller in 1956 suggested humans could hold roughly seven items (plus or minus two) in working memory at once. For decades, that number was treated as gospel. Intrinsic Load

A confusingly formatted report, a presentation slide crammed with bullet points, an email that buries its key ask in paragraph four — all of these generate extraneous load. The goal, when designing any learning or working environment, is to minimize extraneous load, manage intrinsic load relative to current expertise, and protect enough mental bandwidth for germane load. When you ignore these three, you are essentially trying to pour four liters of water into a two-liter container and wondering why you are always wet.
What This Looks Like in Real Knowledge Work
Most knowledge workers are not struggling because they are unintelligent or undisciplined. They are struggling because their working environments are structured in direct opposition to how working memory actually functions.
Consider the typical meeting. You are expected to listen to a speaker, read slides simultaneously, take notes, respond to questions, and monitor a chat thread — all at once. Each of these tasks draws from the same limited pool of working memory. An expert chess player does not see 32 individual pieces in random positions. The practical implication is enormous. When you invest in building genuine expertise in your core domain, you are not just getting better at your job. Designing Your Work Environment Around Cognitive Load

Reduce Extraneous Load Aggressively
Audit your information environment for unnecessary complexity. Does your project management system require ten clicks to log a simple update? Does your email inbox function as a task list, meaning every time you open it you are forced to re-process hundreds of items? These are not minor inconveniences — they are systematic drains on the cognitive resource you need for actual thinking.
Turn off non-essential notifications. Not because notifications are morally bad, but because each one forces your working memory to evaluate its relevance and then — at significant cost — reload whatever you were thinking about before. Even notifications you choose to ignore consume working memory in the act of being ignored.
Sequence Complexity Deliberately
One of Sweller’s most important pedagogical insights is that learning should be sequenced from low complexity to high complexity — not because learners cannot handle difficulty, but because working memory needs room to build schemas before it can handle multiple new elements simultaneously. This means that scheduling deep work is not a productivity preference. It is a cognitive necessity for anyone doing complex intellectual work. Block it, protect it, and treat interruptions during it as genuinely costly — because they are, measurably so.
Match Task Complexity to Cognitive State
Not all hours of the day are created equal in terms of working memory availability. Factors including sleep quality, circadian rhythms, decision fatigue, and emotional state all affect how much effective capacity your working memory has at any given moment. Most people have a peak window — often mid-morning for early risers — where they have the greatest cognitive resources available.
Performing your highest intrinsic-load work during that window and reserving lower-complexity tasks — email, administrative work, routine meetings — for periods of natural cognitive ebb is not laziness or rigidity. It is using your brain’s actual operating schedule rather than fighting it.
A Note on Cognitive Load and Learning
If you are a knowledge worker who also regularly learns new skills — which in 2024 is essentially everyone — Cognitive Load Theory has direct implications for how you study and train.
The research is unambiguous: cramming many concepts together in a single session overloads working memory and produces poor long-term retention. When the barrier is disrupted — by harsh surfactants, over-exfoliation, extreme weather, or physical damage — keratinocytes in the lower layers respond by ramping up lipid synthesis and accelerating differentiation. This is the “self-repair” capacity that skin fasting proponents are gesturing toward. The argument is that by constantly applying external lipids and humectants, you may dampen this repair signaling.
There is some biological plausibility here. Research on occlusive moisturizers has shown that applying petrolatum to intact skin can temporarily suppress some aspects of lipid synthesis in the epidermis (Fluhr et al., 2008). This doesn’t mean your skin becomes permanently dependent — the effect is transient and reverses when the occlusion is removed — but it does suggest the barrier is responsive to external conditions. That responsiveness, however, cuts both ways.
Where the “Skin Goes Lazy” Argument Breaks Down
The leap from “external products modulate barrier activity” to “you should stop using products so your skin self-regulates” ignores a crucial variable: the baseline condition of your skin and your environment.
For someone with chronically compromised barrier function — people with atopic dermatitis, rosacea, psoriasis, or even just genetically dry skin — removing moisturizers doesn’t trigger a heroic wave of self-repair. It triggers inflammation, increased TEWL, and a worsening barrier cycle. The evidence here is fairly robust: regular moisturizer use in infants at high genetic risk for atopic dermatitis has been shown to reduce the incidence of the condition (Simpson et al., 2014), suggesting that supporting the barrier externally is genuinely protective, not just cosmetically convenient.
For healthy skin in a temperate, controlled indoor environment — say, a knowledge worker sitting in an air-conditioned office staring at screens for eight hours — the answer is less clear-cut. Low indoor humidity is a significant, underappreciated driver of TEWL. Office environments commonly drop below 30% relative humidity in winter, conditions under which even healthy skin struggles to maintain adequate hydration without some topical support.
So the “your skin can handle it” argument depends enormously on the actual stressors your skin faces daily. Urban air pollution, blue light exposure, disrupted sleep, and stress-induced cortisol fluctuations all have measurable effects on skin barrier function and oxidative stress (Vierkötter & Krutmann, 2012). Telling your skin to self-regulate in the middle of all that is a bit like telling someone to quit their gym membership because their muscles should be able to maintain themselves naturally.
The One Scenario Where Skin Fasting Makes Genuine Sense
Here is where I want to be fair to the concept, because it does contain a kernel of legitimate advice buried under the overhyped framing.
A significant number of people — especially those who’ve gone deep into the 10-step routine rabbit hole — are genuinely over-doing it. They’re layering active ingredients in combinations that cause irritation, using exfoliating acids daily, applying vitamin C serums that destabilize other products in their routine, or using too many potentially comedogenic ingredients simultaneously. For these individuals, stripping back to basics for a week or two is genuinely useful — not because the skin “needs a break from products” in some mystical sense, but because the routine itself was causing low-grade barrier disruption.
When you pare back to a gentle cleanser, a simple moisturizer, and SPF, you give the skin a chance to recover from routine-induced irritation, and you also create a cleaner baseline for re-introducing products one at a time. This is essentially an elimination protocol — the same logic doctors use with food sensitivities — and it’s a reasonable diagnostic tool if your skin is reacting in ways you can’t pinpoint.
Researchers have noted that even short-term reduction in routine complexity can improve skin barrier metrics in individuals with sensitive or reactive skin, likely because it reduces the cumulative irritant load (Draelos, 2018). That finding is meaningful, but it doesn’t mean you should cycle off your ceramide moisturizer every few weeks as a maintenance habit. The driver of improvement is removing irritants, not removing all products.
Sunscreen: The Non-Negotiable Exception
I want to be blunt about this because it sometimes gets lost in skin minimalism discussions: no skin fasting protocol should involve skipping sunscreen on days when you’re exposed to UV radiation. Full stop.
UV exposure is the primary environmental driver of photoaging and a major risk factor for skin cancers. The idea that “your skin needs UV to build resilience” has no credible scientific support. What UV does is generate reactive oxygen species that damage DNA, degrade collagen via matrix metalloproteinase activation, and disrupt barrier function — none of which constitute useful training stimuli in the way that, say, progressive overload builds muscle. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher remains one of the most evidence-supported interventions in all of dermatology.
If your skin fasting protocol involves skipping SPF on sunny days because you want to “go product-free,” you are trading a speculative benefit for a documented harm. Keep the sunscreen.
What the Research Actually Supports Doing
The most defensible version of “skin fasting” is really just a periodic routine audit. Here is what that looks like in practice:

Every serious lifter hits a wall eventually. The weights that felt manageable two weeks ago now feel like they’re bolted to the floor. Your motivation has evaporated, your joints ache in that low-grade way that never quite goes away, and you’re sleeping eight hours but waking up exhausted. Most people’s instinct at this point is to push harder — more volume, more intensity, fewer rest days. That instinct is almost always wrong.

A deload week is a planned, intentional period of reduced training stress. It’s not a vacation from the gym. It’s not a sign of weakness or inconsistency. It is, in fact, one of the most evidence-supported tools in athletic development — and one of the most underused by the exact population that would benefit most from it: knowledge workers in their late twenties through mid-forties who are training hard around demanding careers, family obligations, and chronic cognitive load.
What Actually Happens to Your Body During Hard Training
To understand why deliberate recovery works, you need a baseline understanding of what training actually does to your physiology. When you lift weights or perform intense cardio, you are not building fitness in the gym. You are breaking your body down. The adaptations — increased muscle mass, improved cardiovascular efficiency, greater neuromuscular coordination — happen during recovery, not during the workout itself.
This process is governed by what exercise scientists call the supercompensation model. After a training stress is applied, performance temporarily drops as the body deals with accumulated fatigue. Then, given adequate recovery, the body bounces back above its previous baseline. Repeat this cycle intelligently over months and years, and you get progressive fitness. But here’s the problem most people run into: if you apply the next training stress before recovery is complete, you never reach that supercompensation peak. You just keep digging the fatigue hole deeper.
The research supports this clearly. Meeusen et al. (2013) described two distinct stages of overreaching — functional and non-functional — and warned that without adequate recovery periods built into programming, athletes accumulate what is clinically recognized as overtraining syndrome, characterized by prolonged performance decrements, mood disturbances, hormonal disruption, and immune suppression. This isn’t elite-athlete-only territory. Recreational lifters training four to five days per week without planned recovery are absolutely capable of reaching non-functional overreaching states.
The Fatigue Mask: Why You Can’t See Your Own Fitness
Here’s a concept that changed how I think about training, and how I explain it to students: your current performance is not your actual fitness. It is your fitness minus your fatigue. When fatigue is high, it masks the adaptations your body has already built. You can be significantly stronger and fitter than you’re currently performing — but you’d never know it, because the fog of accumulated stress is sitting on top of those gains.
A deload week doesn’t create fitness. What it does is allow fatigue to dissipate so the fitness you’ve already built can express itself. This is why many athletes report setting personal records in the week or two following a deload — not because they got dramatically stronger during the lower-intensity week, but because the fatigue that was obscuring their true capacity finally lifted.
This concept has real practical implications for knowledge workers specifically. You are managing cognitive fatigue, emotional stress, and physical training stress simultaneously. The nervous system does not cleanly separate these stressors. Chronic work pressure, poor sleep, high-stakes decision-making — all of these draw from the same recovery budget as your training. Issurin (2010) noted that accumulated fatigue from non-training stressors legitimately impairs athletic performance and should be factored into periodization decisions. If your job involves high cognitive demand, you may need to deload more frequently than someone with lower life-stress, regardless of how your training volume looks on paper.
What a Deload Week Actually Looks Like
This is where a lot of people get confused, because “deload” gets used loosely to mean anything from taking the week completely off to just slightly reducing weight. Let me be specific about the main approaches.
Volume Reduction
This is the most commonly recommended approach in the strength and conditioning literature. You keep your intensity (the weight on the bar) roughly the same — typically around 90-95% of your normal working weights — but you cut your sets by 40-60%. If you normally do four sets of squats at a given weight, you do two. You maintain the neuromuscular stimulus that tells your body to hold onto its adaptations, but you dramatically reduce the total mechanical stress on connective tissue, muscles, and the nervous system. This approach is particularly effective for strength-focused trainees who want to avoid detraining effects.
Intensity Reduction
Here you keep your volume roughly similar but drop the load significantly — usually to around 50-60% of your one-rep max or normal training weight. This approach is popular in hypertrophy-focused programs and can feel more psychologically satisfying for people who struggle with doing “less.” The higher rep, lower weight sets still keep blood moving through muscles and maintain movement patterns without taxing recovery systems heavily.
Complete Rest or Active Recovery
For people who are deeply overtrained, or who are managing illness or injury, a full week of rest or light activity (walking, swimming, mobility work) may be most appropriate. The evidence on detraining suggests that meaningful losses in strength and cardiovascular fitness don’t occur in periods of four to seven days for trained individuals, so the fear of “losing everything” in one week off is not supported by the science (Bosquet et al., 2007).
The best deload for you depends on your training history, current fatigue levels, and psychological relationship with the gym. What matters most is that you actually reduce the stress load meaningfully. Dropping from five sets to four sets and calling it a deload is not going to produce the recovery effect you’re looking for.
How Often Should You Deload?
The honest answer is: it depends, and anyone telling you otherwise is oversimplifying. That said, there are some reasonable evidence-informed heuristics that work well for most recreational athletes in demanding careers.
The traditional recommendation in periodization literature has been every fourth week — three weeks of progressive overload followed by one week of reduced volume. This works well as a starting point and is the basis for many commercial programs. But this is a population average, not a prescription. Younger trainees with lower life stress may do well extending to every fifth or sixth week. Older trainees, highly stressed professionals, or anyone managing poor sleep should consider deloading every third week.
More practically, I’d encourage people to learn to read their own signals rather than relying exclusively on the calendar. The following are legitimate indicators that a deload is warranted regardless of where you are in your planned cycle: persistent joint pain that doesn’t resolve with a few days off, motivation levels that have crashed despite no change in life circumstances, consistent performance regression over two or more weeks, disrupted sleep despite fatigue, and elevated resting heart rate over several consecutive mornings. When multiple signals are present simultaneously, a deload is not optional — it’s urgent.
The Psychology of Doing Less
I’m going to be direct here because I think this is where most intelligent, high-achieving people actually struggle with deloading: it feels like cheating. Knowledge workers aged 25-45 are, broadly speaking, people who have succeeded partly through sustained effort and a low tolerance for perceived laziness. Backing off on training can trigger genuine psychological discomfort — a sense that you’re falling behind, being soft, or undoing progress.
This feeling is real, but it is not accurate. Research on the psychological dimensions of overtraining has consistently identified perfectionism, high achievement motivation, and difficulty tolerating reduced performance as risk factors for non-functional overreaching (Nixdorf et al., 2016). The same personality profile that makes you productive at work makes you vulnerable to overtraining in the gym. Recognizing this isn’t a criticism — it’s useful information about where to apply conscious counter-pressure.
One reframe that I’ve found genuinely useful, both personally and when working with students: a deload week is not rest from training. It is a specific training stimulus — one targeted at recovery systems rather than performance systems. You are doing something purposeful and productive during a deload week. You are actively managing your long-term trajectory. The short-term discomfort of doing less is the price of continued long-term progress.
Nutrition and Sleep During a Deload
Since training volume is lower, many people instinctively reduce their food intake during a deload. This is usually counterproductive. Your body’s repair and adaptation processes require substrate — protein for muscle protein synthesis, carbohydrates to replenish glycogen stores that have likely been chronically depressed, and adequate total calories to support hormonal recovery. If you’ve been in a caloric deficit during your training block, a deload week is an excellent time to eat at maintenance or even slightly above it. You’re not going to meaningfully gain fat in one week, but you may accelerate tissue repair, normalize cortisol levels, and come out the other side feeling considerably more human.
Sleep is the single most important variable in recovery, and it’s the one most consistently compromised in the knowledge worker demographic. Chronically shortened or disrupted sleep impairs muscle protein synthesis, suppresses anabolic hormones, and extends the timeline for connective tissue repair. During a deload week specifically, prioritizing sleep quality and duration is likely to produce more recovery benefit than any specific training protocol adjustment (Mah et al., 2011). If that means declining evening social obligations for a week, the trade-off is almost certainly worth it.
Structuring Your Return to Full Training
Coming back from a deload should be gradual, not explosive. The fatigue mask has lifted, you feel good, and the temptation to immediately test your limits is understandable. Resist it for at least the first week back. Re-introduce volume progressively — starting at perhaps 80-90% of your pre-deload volume before returning to full loads in week two. This isn’t excessive caution; it’s an acknowledgment that your tissues, though recovered, need to be reloaded progressively to maintain structural integrity.
This is also a good moment to reassess your programming. Did you arrive at the deload feeling genuinely run down, or did you hit it as planned and feel relatively fresh? The former suggests your volume or intensity was too high for your recovery capacity. The latter suggests your programming is well-calibrated. Use the information each training block generates to adjust the next one — this is the practice of intelligent periodization, and it’s what separates long-term progress from spinning your wheels.
Why This Matters More After 35
Recovery capacity is not static across a lifespan. Multiple physiological factors shift with age in ways that make deliberate recovery progressively more important. Testosterone and growth hormone levels decline gradually across adulthood. Sleep architecture changes, with less time spent in the deep slow-wave stages most critical for physical recovery. Connective tissue repair slows. These changes don’t mean training becomes less effective — the evidence is clear that strength training remains one of the most beneficial health interventions at any age — but they do mean that the ratio of recovery investment to training volume needs to shift.
For knowledge workers in their late thirties and forties specifically, this often means accepting that the programming that worked brilliantly at 28 may not be appropriate now — not because you’re less capable, but because the recovery side of the equation requires more attention. Deloads may need to be more frequent, more complete, and treated with the same intentionality as the hard training weeks themselves.
The athletes who train for decades without chronic injury and continue making progress into their fifties and sixties almost universally share one characteristic: they figured out, either through coaching or hard experience, how to manage fatigue intelligently. Deloading isn’t what you do when you’re tired and need a break. It’s what you do consistently, as part of a coherent long-term strategy, because you understand that fitness is built over years — and years of consistent training require sustainable practices.
The lifters who are still in the gym, still progressing, still pain-free at fifty — they’re not there because they trained harder than everyone else. They’re there because they trained smarter, recovered deliberately, and treated rest as a tool rather than a failure. That’s the practice worth building.

If you spend any time in health-conscious corners of the internet, you have almost certainly encountered the seed oils debate. On one side, influencers and carnivore diet advocates are throwing their canola oil in the trash and declaring it industrial poison. On the other side, mainstream dietitians are rolling their eyes and pointing to decades of cardiovascular research. Both camps speak with enormous confidence. Neither is giving you the complete picture.

As someone who teaches earth science and has spent years thinking about how complex systems work — and who also manages ADHD, which means I have a very low tolerance for information that doesn’t actually cash out into something useful — I find this debate genuinely interesting. Not because the answer is simple, but because the way people argue about it reveals a lot about how we misread evidence.
Let’s work through what we actually know, what remains genuinely uncertain, and what a reasonable, evidence-literate person should probably do with their cooking oils right now.
What Are Seed Oils, Exactly?
The term “seed oils” typically refers to industrially processed vegetable oils extracted from seeds: canola (rapeseed), soybean, corn, sunflower, safflower, cottonseed, and grapeseed oils. They are distinguished from oils extracted from the flesh of fruits, like olive oil or coconut oil, though this distinction matters more culturally than chemically.
What unites the seed oils critics target is their high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly omega-6 linoleic acid. These oils are also produced through industrial processes that may involve high heat, chemical solvents like hexane, deodorization, and bleaching. This processing is a legitimate point of scrutiny, even if it’s often overstated.
The claim from seed oil skeptics is essentially: these oils are high in omega-6 PUFAs, which drive inflammation; their omega-6 content distorts our evolutionary omega-6 to omega-3 ratio; the processing creates toxic byproducts like aldehydes and oxidized lipids; and the whole situation is making us sick. Plausible-sounding, internally consistent, and worth taking seriously.
The Oxidation Problem Is Real — But Context Matters
Here is where I will give the seed oil critics genuine credit. PUFAs are chemically less stable than saturated fats or monounsaturated fats. When exposed to heat, light, or oxygen, they undergo oxidation and can form aldehydes, lipid peroxides, and other reactive compounds. Some of these compounds are genuinely harmful in sufficient quantities.
Studies have found that repeatedly heating seed oils — the kind of thing that happens in commercial deep fryers — produces measurable quantities of compounds like 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), which has been associated with oxidative stress in cell studies (Grootveld et al., 2014). This is not nothing. If you are eating food fried in oil that has been sitting in a commercial fryer all day, you are probably consuming some amount of oxidized lipid byproducts.
However, the leap from “these compounds exist” to “the seed oils you use at home are killing you” requires several logical steps that the evidence does not cleanly support. Cooking once at moderate temperatures with fresh oil produces far less oxidation than repeated high-heat commercial frying. The dose, as always, matters enormously.
More stable fats for high-heat cooking — avocado oil, refined coconut oil, ghee — are genuinely a reasonable choice if you’re searing meat at 450°F. That’s practical advice. But it’s a different claim from “linoleic acid is metabolic poison.”
The Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: Legitimate Concern or Overblown?
The evolutionary argument goes like this: our ancestors consumed omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in roughly a 1:1 to 4:1 ratio. Modern Western diets, saturated with seed oils, push this ratio toward 15:1 or even higher. Since omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids compete for the same metabolic pathways, an excess of omega-6 linoleic acid could theoretically reduce conversion of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid to the longer-chain EPA and DHA that the brain and cardiovascular system actually use.
This is biochemically coherent, and the high omega-6 intake of Western populations is real. However — and this is critical — the evidence that linoleic acid itself is pro-inflammatory is much weaker than the theory suggests. When researchers have looked at blood markers of inflammation in humans (not cell cultures, not rodents fed absurdly high fat diets), higher linoleic acid intake is not consistently associated with higher inflammatory markers (Fritsche, 2015). In fact, some studies find the opposite.
The rodent studies that seed oil critics frequently cite fed animals diets where 30-60% of calories came from specific oils, which bears no resemblance to human consumption patterns. Extrapolating from a mouse eating 45% of its calories as soybean oil to a person using canola oil to sauté vegetables is not rigorous epidemiology.
The ratio concern is better addressed by increasing omega-3 intake — eating more fatty fish, adding flaxseed, considering a quality fish oil supplement — than by assuming seed oil elimination is the critical lever.
What Do the Large-Scale Human Studies Actually Show?
This is where things get complicated, and where I think both camps fail their audiences by cherry-picking.
The traditional public health position is built substantially on research from the mid-20th century showing that replacing saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats lowered LDL cholesterol and reduced cardiovascular events. This evidence base is real and substantial. Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials have found that replacing saturated fat with PUFA is associated with reduced cardiovascular risk (Mozaffarian et al., 2010).
However, seed oil critics point — with some justification — to recovered data from older trials like the Minnesota Coronary Experiment and the Sydney Diet Heart Study. These trials replaced saturated fat with vegetable oils high in linoleic acid and found either no cardiovascular benefit or, in some analyses, increased mortality (Ramsden et al., 2016). These results are real and they were largely suppressed or ignored for decades, which is a legitimate scientific scandal worth knowing about.
So we have a genuine conflict in the evidence. Some trials support replacing saturated fat with PUFA. Others suggest the effect is less clear-cut, particularly when the comparison is vegetable oil vs. saturated animal fat rather than vegetable oil vs. trans fat.
What most nutrition researchers now emphasize is that the replacement food matters enormously. Replacing butter with refined soybean oil in a processed food context is a very different intervention than replacing butter with olive oil in a Mediterranean diet pattern. Treating all PUFAs as interchangeable, or all saturated fats as equivalent, oversimplifies a genuinely complex system.
Olive Oil Keeps Winning — Here’s Why That Matters
One of the most consistent findings across nutritional epidemiology is that olive oil, particularly extra virgin olive oil, is associated with positive health outcomes. The PREDIMED trial — a large randomized trial in Spain — found that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil significantly reduced major cardiovascular events compared to a low-fat control diet (Estruch et al., 2013).
Olive oil is predominantly monounsaturated (oleic acid), which is more oxidatively stable than PUFAs. But extra virgin olive oil also contains a rich array of polyphenols — compounds like oleocanthal, hydroxytyrosol, and oleuropein — that have genuine anti-inflammatory properties. These polyphenols are largely absent from refined seed oils.
This is instructive. The argument that “fat type is what matters” and the argument that “processing destroys beneficial compounds” are not mutually exclusive. Extra virgin olive oil wins partly because of its fatty acid profile and partly because of what processing hasn’t removed from it. Refined seed oils, stripped of any naturally occurring beneficial compounds during processing, don’t have that second advantage working for them.
This doesn’t make seed oils poison. It does suggest that extra virgin olive oil is a genuinely superior choice for cold preparations, low-heat cooking, and dressings — and that you shouldn’t feel anxious if that’s your primary cooking fat.
The Food Environment Problem
Here is the argument that I think actually lands, and that both the mainstream nutrition establishment and the seed oil critics tend to underweight: seed oils are a reliable marker of ultra-processed food consumption.
Seed oils are cheap, shelf-stable, and flavorless, making them ideal ingredients in packaged snacks, fast food, processed baked goods, and restaurant cooking. When observational studies find associations between high seed oil intake and poor health outcomes, it is genuinely difficult to disentangle “effect of linoleic acid” from “effect of eating a diet full of ultra-processed foods.”
People who consume large amounts of seed oils in Western populations are typically consuming them via chips, cookies, frozen meals, fried fast food, and commercial salad dressings — not via careful home cooking with fresh canola oil. The entire dietary pattern associated with high seed oil intake is one of high caloric density, low fiber, low micronutrient density, and high refined carbohydrate content.
Eliminating seed oils while continuing to eat ultra-processed food made with other fats — or simply replacing your cooking oil at home while your diet is otherwise unchanged — is probably not the powerful health intervention its advocates think it is. Conversely, reducing ultra-processed food consumption will dramatically lower your seed oil intake as a side effect, and that’s almost certainly beneficial.
What Should a Reasonable Person Actually Do?
Given all of this, here is the most honest synthesis I can offer.
The evidence does not support the claim that moderate consumption of seed oils like canola or sunflower oil in home cooking is a significant health threat. The observational data associating seed oils with harm is largely confounded by overall dietary pattern, and the mechanistic concerns about linoleic acid driving inflammation are not well supported in controlled human studies.
At the same time, there are genuinely good reasons to prefer certain fats over others. Extra virgin olive oil has the most robust evidence base for health benefits. For high-heat cooking, more stable fats like avocado oil, ghee, or refined coconut oil perform better and produce fewer oxidation byproducts. Emphasizing omega-3 rich foods or supplementing to balance omega-6 intake is prudent given how omega-3 deficient most Western diets are.
The practical priority order looks something like this: use extra virgin olive oil liberally for raw applications and moderate-heat cooking; use a high-smoke-point stable fat for searing and roasting; don’t stress about seed oils in the context of an otherwise whole-food-heavy diet; and direct your real dietary energy toward reducing ultra-processed food, which will solve the seed oil overconsumption problem automatically as a side effect.
The seed oil debate has done at least one useful thing: it has gotten people to read ingredient labels and think about where their dietary fat is coming from. That’s not nothing. But it becomes counterproductive when it turns cooking oil selection into a source of anxiety while people ignore the far larger dietary signals — fiber intake, vegetable variety, meal frequency, overall food quality — that the evidence consistently and repeatedly points toward as more impactful levers.
The best nutritional decision you can make today probably has nothing to do with which oil is in your cabinet. It’s almost certainly about eating more whole foods, more vegetables, more fish, and less food that comes from a factory. Once you’ve done that, then the oil question starts to matter at the margins — and at that level of dietary quality, the answer is fairly clear: extra virgin olive oil, used generously, is the one fat with enough evidence behind it to deserve its reputation.

Step 3, compare your result to the “expected value” in the back of the manual. If your numbers matched, you got full marks. If they didn’t, you wrote “human error” in the conclusion and moved on.

That is not science. That is cooking without understanding why you’re cooking.
The frustrating thing is that most people who design these labs genuinely believe they are teaching scientific thinking. They’re not. They’re teaching compliance with established procedures — a valuable skill, don’t get me wrong, but a fundamentally different thing from the messy, iterative, failure-rich process that actual scientific inquiry involves.
As someone who teaches Earth Science Education at Seoul National University and was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, I’ve spent a significant amount of time thinking about why traditional lab formats fail so many learners — especially those of us whose brains resist passive, linear instruction. What I’ve found, backed by a growing body of research in science education, is that inquiry-based approaches don’t just work better for neurodivergent learners. They work better, period.
What Inquiry-Based Science Teaching Actually Means
The phrase gets thrown around a lot in education circles, often without much precision. So let’s be specific. Inquiry-based science teaching refers to instructional approaches where students generate questions, design investigations, collect and interpret data, and construct explanations — rather than simply verifying known results through prescribed steps.
There’s a spectrum here, which researchers commonly describe in terms of levels. At the “structured inquiry” end, the teacher provides the question and the materials, but students determine the procedure. At the “open inquiry” end, students are responsible for everything from question formation to conclusions. In between sits “guided inquiry,” where the teacher provides the question but students design the investigation themselves (National Research Council, 2000).
For most classroom and professional training contexts, guided inquiry is the sweet spot. Full open inquiry requires substantial background knowledge and comfort with ambiguity — skills that have to be built gradually. Dropping learners directly into open inquiry without scaffolding is like asking someone to improvise jazz before they’ve learned any music theory. Ambitious but counterproductive.
The Cognitive Difference Between Confirming and Discovering
Here’s what brain science tells us about why the distinction matters. When we already know the “right answer” to a question, our brains process incoming information differently than when we’re genuinely uncertain. Confirmatory tasks activate different neural pathways than exploratory ones. Genuine uncertainty — the kind that comes from not knowing how an experiment will turn out — drives deeper encoding, stronger motivation, and more durable conceptual understanding (Berlyne, 1960, as cited in Engel, 2011).
This isn’t just theory. Studies consistently show that students who engage in authentic inquiry retain concepts longer, transfer knowledge more flexibly to new contexts, and report higher motivation than those taught through traditional verification labs. The mechanism seems to involve what some researchers call “productive failure” — the cognitive work of struggling with a problem before receiving instruction actually strengthens subsequent learning (Kapur, 2016).
For knowledge workers in their 20s through 40s — people who are often engaged in professional learning, reskilling, or continuing education — this has direct implications. If you’re designing training programs, onboarding experiences, or professional development workshops, the structure of the learning activities matters as much as the content itself.
Lab Design Principles That Actually Develop Scientific Thinking
Start With a Genuine Question, Not a Forgone Conclusion
The single most important shift you can make in any inquiry-based lab is ensuring that the central question is one whose answer isn’t immediately obvious to the learner. This sounds simple, but it’s harder than it looks. Many “inquiry labs” still begin with a question that students can answer from memory, which defeats the entire purpose.
A genuine question has these features: it’s empirically answerable (you can actually collect data to address it), it’s genuinely uncertain from the learner’s perspective, and it connects to a larger conceptual framework they’re building. In Earth Science contexts, for example, “How does particle size affect infiltration rate in different soil types?” is a genuine question for most undergraduates. “Does water infiltrate soil?” is not.
The question also needs to be specific enough to be testable but broad enough to allow for multiple approaches. Questions that only admit one investigative method tend to slide back into recipe-following, because students sense (correctly) that there’s only one right way to proceed.
Build in Prediction Before Procedure
One practice I’ve found consistently powerful — and that research supports — is requiring learners to make explicit, reasoned predictions before they begin any investigation. Not a casual guess, but a structured prediction that includes the reasoning behind it. “I predict X will happen because Y.”
This does several things simultaneously. It activates prior knowledge and forces learners to commit it to working memory. It creates a cognitive stake in the outcome — now you want to know if you were right, which drives engagement. And perhaps most importantly, it creates a reference point for reflection when the results come in. Whether the prediction was correct or not becomes less important than interrogating why.
When my prediction is wrong, that’s actually the richest moment in the entire learning process, assuming the lab is structured to take advantage of it. The question “Why didn’t I get what I expected?” is one of the most scientifically productive questions a person can ask. It is also, not coincidentally, the question that drives most real scientific progress.
Separate Data Collection From Interpretation
Traditional labs collapse data collection and interpretation into a single simultaneous process. Students often record their observations while already writing their conclusions, which means they’re interpreting before they’ve seen the complete picture. This is a subtle but significant problem.
In inquiry-based design, there’s a deliberate structural separation between the phases. You collect. You pause. You look at everything you collected. Then you interpret. This models actual scientific practice and prevents the common cognitive shortcut of fitting observations to pre-formed conclusions — what researchers sometimes call confirmation bias in data interpretation.
In practice, this might mean a mandatory “data review period” where learners lay out all their measurements, compare results across trials, and identify anomalies before anyone writes a single interpretive sentence. For group labs, this is also where the richest scientific conversations happen. Different people notice different things in the same data set, which is exactly how science works in collaborative research environments.
Make Failure Structurally Safe and Intellectually Valuable
This one is harder than it sounds because it requires changing the evaluation framework, not just the activity design. If students lose marks for “wrong” results, they will always prioritize getting the expected answer over genuine inquiry. The incentive structure overrides everything else you’ve designed.
Inquiry-based assessment focuses on process quality rather than outcome accuracy. Did the learner identify a testable question? Did they design a procedure that could actually address it? Did they account for variables? Did they interpret their data logically, even if the data were messy or unexpected? A student who gets surprising results and analyzes them rigorously is doing better science than one who gets “correct” results by fudging their numbers, and the assessment should reflect that.
Research on metacognitive skill development supports this approach strongly. When learners know they will be evaluated on their thinking process rather than their numerical outputs, they engage more deeply with the entire investigation and develop stronger self-monitoring habits (White & Frederiksen, 1998).
Adapting These Principles for Adult Professional Contexts
Everything I’ve described so far applies directly to classroom settings, but the knowledge workers reading this are probably thinking about a different context: professional training, corporate learning and development, research team onboarding, or their own self-directed learning.
The principles translate directly, even if the domain changes completely. Adults engaged in professional development benefit from inquiry-based structures for the same cognitive reasons that younger learners do. The brain’s response to genuine uncertainty, to productive failure, to the satisfaction of self-generated explanation — these don’t expire after graduation.
Case Example: Technical Training Programs
Consider a software team being trained on a new data analysis platform. The traditional approach: here’s the interface, here are the steps for each function, practice these exercises by following the guide. The inquiry-based approach: here’s a real dataset with a genuine business question attached to it. Figure out how to use the tools to answer it. We’ll discuss what you tried, what worked, and what didn’t.
The second approach is slower at first. It’s messier. Some teams will go down paths that don’t work. But the understanding that results is far more robust, and the transfer to novel problems — the actual work these people will be doing — is substantially better. This mirrors findings from research on professional skill development, where authentic problem-centered instruction consistently outperforms procedural training for complex cognitive tasks (Hmelo-Silver, 2004).
The Role of Reflection in Cementing Inquiry-Based Learning
No inquiry-based experience is complete without structured reflection, and this is often the component that gets cut when time is short — which, given that most of us are operating under significant time pressure, means it gets cut frequently. That’s a mistake worth understanding in detail.
The reflection phase is where tacit knowledge becomes explicit. It’s where “I noticed something weird in the data” becomes “I think I understand why certain variables interact that way.” Without this consolidation, inquiry-based learning can actually produce less organized knowledge structures than direct instruction, because the learner has lots of experience but hasn’t yet built the conceptual framework to organize it.
Reflection doesn’t need to be long. Three focused questions — What did I expect? What did I actually find? What does the gap between those two things tell me? — can accomplish a great deal in ten minutes. The key is that it happens deliberately, not incidentally, and ideally involves some form of externalization: writing, discussion, or explanation to another person.
The Honest Challenges of Doing This Well
I want to be straightforward about something: inquiry-based teaching is harder to implement than traditional instruction. It requires more facilitation skill. It produces messier classrooms and training sessions. It takes longer. Results are less predictable and therefore harder to defend to administrators or executives who want tidy outcomes.
For teachers and trainers with ADHD, or anyone whose cognitive load is already high, the additional complexity of facilitating genuine inquiry rather than following a script can be genuinely daunting. I’m not going to pretend otherwise. What I will say is that the facilitation skills involved — managing ambiguity, asking rather than telling, sitting with uncertainty while students or trainees work through problems — are exactly the skills that make anyone a better teacher or trainer, regardless of the subject matter.
There’s also the question of content coverage. Inquiry-based approaches typically cover less content in the same amount of time than direct instruction. For fields with mandated curriculum coverage requirements, this creates real tension. The research suggests that the trade-off is often worth it — deeper understanding of fewer concepts serves learners better than shallow familiarity with many — but this is a judgment call that depends heavily on context (National Research Council, 2000).
What Scientific Thinking Actually Looks Like When It’s Working
When inquiry-based labs are designed well and implemented consistently over time, you start to see something genuinely different in how learners engage with information outside the lab context. They start asking “How do we know that?” about claims they encounter. They notice when data has been collected in ways that introduce bias. They’re comfortable saying “I’m not sure yet, I need more information” rather than defaulting to the nearest available answer.
These aren’t small things. In an information environment where the ability to evaluate evidence critically is under constant pressure from misinformation, motivated reasoning, and sheer information overload, scientific thinking habits are a form of cognitive self-defense. And they’re habits that can be deliberately cultivated through the structure of learning experiences — not just by studying content, but by practicing the process of inquiry itself.
The labs that build real scientific thinking share a common architecture: genuine questions, explicit predictions, honest data, structural space for failure, and disciplined reflection. Get those elements right, and the content you’re teaching — whether it’s Earth Science or software engineering or organizational behavior — will stick in a fundamentally different way than it does when you hand someone a recipe and ask them to follow it.

Understanding where it comes from — and how to calculate your own exposure — is the first step to actually reducing it.
What Executive Dysfunction Actually Does to Your Wallet
Executive dysfunction describes the difficulty ADHD brains have with initiating tasks, managing time, holding information in working memory, and regulating emotional responses to boring-but-important activities. Bills, subscription audits, insurance renewals, warranty registrations — these are precisely the kinds of tasks that require sustained attention on something that provides zero immediate dopamine reward.
Research confirms this is not a willpower problem. Adults with ADHD show measurable differences in prefrontal cortex activity during tasks requiring planning and inhibition (Barkley, 2015). The prefrontal cortex is essentially the region responsible for “doing the boring important thing instead of the interesting immediate thing.” When that system underperforms, the financial consequences are structural and predictable.

For knowledge workers, add professional licensing renewal fees, software subscription auto-renewals you meant to cancel, and professional development deadlines that cost you career advancement rather than cash directly.

2. Subscription Creep and the “I’ll Cancel It Later” Trap
Free trials are designed with the assumption that a significant percentage of users will forget to cancel. For neurotypical users, this is a mild risk. For someone with ADHD, it is a near-certainty. 3. Impulsive Purchasing and Dopamine Economics
This one requires honesty. ADHD brains are drawn to novelty, and purchasing something new delivers a brief but potent dopamine hit. This is not a moral failure. It is a neurochemical fact. The ADHD system is chronically understimulated, and shopping — especially online shopping with its frictionless instant gratification — is a reliable (if expensive) stimulation source.
This category includes obvious impulse buys, but also the subtler pattern of purchasing solutions to problems rather than implementing them. How many productivity apps are on your phone? How many books on your shelf are there because buying them felt like progress toward reading them? How many kitchen gadgets promised to make cooking feel manageable?
The cost varies enormously by income and access, but for knowledge workers earning $60,000–$120,000 annually, research and clinical observation suggest impulsive spending could account for $1,000–$3,500 per year in purchases that provide minimal long-term value.
4. Duplicate Purchases and Organizational Costs
You own three pairs of scissors because you can never find them. You bought a replacement phone charger before discovering the original in your laptop bag. You purchased a second copy of a book you already owned but couldn’t locate. You paid for a replacement for something you eventually found three weeks later.
This category also includes the cost of disorganization more broadly: expedited shipping fees because you remembered something at the last minute, buying ingredients you already have because you forgot to check, or paying for professional services to sort out administrative chaos that accumulated because you couldn’t face it earlier.
Estimated annual cost: $200–$700 per year.
5. Career and Income Costs
This is the category most people undercount because it doesn’t appear as a line item on a bank statement. But it is arguably the largest component of the ADHD tax for knowledge workers.
Executive dysfunction affects the ability to respond to emails promptly, complete projects on deadline without a crisis, negotiate salary (which requires planning, preparation, and willingness to tolerate discomfort), pursue promotions, or maintain the kind of consistent professional presentation that leads to advancement. ADHD is associated with lower educational attainment controlling for intelligence, higher rates of job loss, and lower lifetime earnings compared to non-ADHD peers (Barkley et al., 2008).
Even holding a stable job, consider the cost of: opportunities not pursued because of overwhelm, networking events not attended because of social anxiety driven by fear of ADHD-related social missteps, contracts not signed because negotiation felt impossible, freelance work not invoiced on time, or raises not requested because preparing for the conversation felt insurmountable.
This category is the hardest to calculate and the most important to acknowledge. Even a conservative estimate — say, one missed salary negotiation over five years at a $5,000 increment — represents $5,000 lost permanently, compounding over the remainder of your career.
How to Run Your Own ADHD Tax Calculation
You don’t need a spreadsheet with fifty categories. You need honest answers to a short set of questions, and you need to commit to not minimizing the answers because the number feels uncomfortable.
Step 1: Pull Three Months of Bank and Credit Card Statements
Go through them line by line. Mark every subscription you don’t actively use. Mark every late fee. Mark every item you bought and returned, or bought and never used. Mark anything you purchased because you lost the original. Don’t judge the items yet — just tag them.
Three months gives you a reasonable sample without requiring you to reconstruct a full year from memory, which — let’s be honest — isn’t going to happen.
Step 2: Estimate Missed Income Opportunities
This requires some uncomfortable reflection. In the last 12 months: Did you miss a professional deadline that affected your income or reputation? Did you fail to follow up on a work opportunity? Did you not pursue a raise, promotion, or new role that you were qualified for? Did you miss a tax deduction you were entitled to?
Assign rough dollar values. If you didn’t ask for a raise you were going to ask for, estimate what that raise would have been. If you missed a tax deduction, look up what the deduction was worth at your bracket. Don’t be precise — be honest.
Step 3: Calculate Your Recurring Annual Rate
Take your three-month figure and multiply by four to get an annualized estimate. Then add your missed income estimate. What you have is a rough annual ADHD tax figure. For most knowledge workers reading this, the number lands somewhere between $2,000 and $7,000 per year. For some, it’s higher.
The point is not to make yourself feel bad. The point is to give yourself data, because data is what actually motivates behavioral change in ADHD brains — not moral lectures about being more responsible.
Why Standard Financial Advice Fails ADHD Adults
The personal finance industry is built on the assumption of consistent, voluntary behavior over time. Make a budget and stick to it. Set up reminders. Build a habit. Review your finances monthly. These are all reasonable suggestions for neurotypical executive function systems. They fail comprehensively for ADHD adults because they require precisely the skills that ADHD impairs: sustained initiation, working memory for rules and schedules, and emotional regulation around boring-but-important tasks.
The conventional ADHD financial advice isn’t wrong — automate what you can, use alerts, simplify your account structure — but it stops short of acknowledging that implementation itself is the problem. Knowing you should automate your bills and actually setting up the automation are separated by an activation energy barrier that is genuinely neurological in nature (Barkley, 2015).
What works better is designing systems that require as close to zero ongoing executive function as possible. Not reminders that you can dismiss. Not to-do lists you can ignore. Reducing the ADHD Tax: What Actually Works
Automate the Non-Negotiables
Every fixed bill — rent, insurance, loan payments — should be on automatic payment from a dedicated account. This is not new advice, but it’s worth being explicit: this account should have only enough money to cover those bills. Over-funding it means the buffer exists for spending. Under-funding it means missed payments. Match the balance to the recurring costs, check it once a quarter, and otherwise remove it from your working memory entirely.
Build Friction Into Subscriptions
Use a service like Rocket Money or a virtual card with a set monthly limit for trial subscriptions. When the trial ends and the charge hits the virtual card limit, it fails. You get a notification. You decide whether you actually want the service enough to pay for it. This converts a passive opt-out (which ADHD adults reliably fail) into an active opt-in (which is harder to miss).
Externalize the Expensive Decisions
For high-stakes financial decisions — salary negotiation, major purchases, investment choices — the ADHD tax is at its highest because these decisions require planning, emotional regulation, and sustained focus. Externalizing them to professionals is not expensive relative to the cost of making those decisions badly or not making them at all. A one-hour session with a fee-only financial planner or a single negotiation coaching conversation can pay for itself many times over.
Treat the ADHD Tax as a Budget Line Item
Until your systems are mature, budget for the ADHD tax explicitly. If you know you will spend approximately $300 in late fees and $500 in unwanted subscriptions over the next year, put $800 in a sinking fund for it. This sounds counterintuitive — you’re planning to lose money — but it accomplishes two things: it reduces the emotional shock of these costs when they occur, and it gives you a concrete target to beat. If you only spend $400 this year on ADHD tax costs, that $400 remaining in the fund becomes visible proof of progress.
The Real Cost Is the Shame Spiral
The financial cost of ADHD is real and substantial. But there is a secondary cost that doesn’t show up in any calculation: the toll of shame, avoidance, and accumulated anxiety around money that develops when you’ve experienced the same financial mistakes repeatedly without understanding why.
Many ADHD adults avoid looking at their bank accounts because the look triggers shame rather than information. They avoid financial planning because financial planning feels like confronting evidence of failure. This avoidance compounds the direct financial losses dramatically — you can’t fix what you won’t look at.
Reframing these losses as structural and neurological rather than moral failures is not about removing accountability. It’s about making accountability actually possible. You cannot take effective corrective action when you’re operating from a shame state. Research on ADHD and emotional dysregulation consistently shows that shame responses impair exactly the executive function capacities needed to address the underlying problem (Hallowell & Ratey, 2011).
Knowing your ADHD tax number — your actual, calculated, honest number — is a radical act of self-respect. It says: I see what is happening clearly enough to measure it, and I am taking it seriously enough to respond with strategy rather than self-criticism. That posture, more than any single financial tool, is what closes the gap between what ADHD adults earn and what they keep.

This post is a distillation of roughly 30 studies on journaling and writing therapy — what actually holds up, what is overhyped, and what the evidence suggests for people like you and me: knowledge workers carrying cognitive loads that would crush a reasonable person on a reasonable schedule.
The Original Experiment That Started Everything
Most of this field traces back to a single researcher: James Pennebaker, a social psychologist at the University of Texas. In 1986, he asked college students to write for 15 to 20 minutes a day over four consecutive days. One group wrote about trivial topics — their shoes, their dorm room furniture. The other group wrote about the most traumatic or emotionally significant experience of their lives. Six months later, the expressive writing group had made significantly fewer visits to the student health center (Pennebaker & Beall, 1986).
That finding launched decades of replication attempts, meta-analyses, and refinements. Some of those replications held up beautifully. Others revealed important nuances that the original study couldn’t capture. Let’s walk through the major categories of what the research now tells us.
Psychological Outcomes: The Strong Evidence
Stress and Anxiety Reduction
The most consistently replicated finding is that expressive writing — specifically writing that engages both emotions and cognition — reduces perceived stress and self-reported anxiety. A meta-analysis by Smyth (1998) analyzed 13 randomized controlled trials and found a moderate but reliable effect size (d = 0.47) across psychological health outcomes. That’s not a trivial number. For context, that effect size is comparable to many brief psychotherapy interventions.
The mechanism that researchers keep returning to is cognitive processing. When you write about a stressful event, you are essentially forcing your brain to organize raw emotional material into a narrative structure. Language requires linearity. Trauma and chronic stress do not naturally present themselves in linear form — they arrive as fragments, as bodily sensations, as intrusive loops. Writing imposes structure, and that structure appears to reduce the cognitive load of carrying unprocessed experience.
Rumination and Worry
For knowledge workers especially, rumination is the silent productivity killer. You’re in a meeting but mentally replaying a critical email from your director. You’re trying to sleep but reconstructing a presentation that went sideways. Research by Borkovec and colleagues has consistently linked this kind of repetitive negative thinking to both anxiety disorders and poor working memory performance.
Here’s where journaling shows a specific, practical benefit. Studies indicate that scheduled worry journaling — deliberately writing down anxious thoughts at a set time — can interrupt the intrusive nature of rumination throughout the day. By giving worry a designated container, you reduce its tendency to colonize unrelated cognitive tasks. Baikie and Wilhelm (2005) reviewed evidence suggesting that expressive writing particularly benefits people who tend to suppress their emotions rather than process them — which describes a substantial proportion of high-achieving professionals.
Depression Symptoms
The evidence here is more nuanced. Writing therapy does appear to reduce depressive symptoms in subclinical populations — people experiencing low mood and low energy who do not meet criteria for a depressive disorder. For people with clinical depression, journaling works best as a supplement to treatment, not a replacement. Several studies found that writing about positive experiences and future goals, rather than dwelling exclusively on negative events, produced better outcomes for people prone to depression (King, 2001). This is an important clinical caveat that gets lost when journaling is marketed as a universal cure.
Physical Health: The Findings You Probably Haven’t Heard
One of the most striking branches of this research involves actual physiological outcomes. This is where I, as an earth science educator with a strong bias toward measurable data, started paying real attention.
Immune Function
Multiple studies have found that expressive writing improves markers of immune function. In one notable study, participants who wrote about traumatic experiences showed higher T-lymphocyte (T-cell) counts four to six weeks after the writing intervention compared to control groups (Pennebaker, Kiecolt-Glaser, & Glaser, 1988). T-cells are a cornerstone of the adaptive immune response, so this isn’t a trivial finding. The researchers proposed that emotional inhibition — the active suppression of upsetting thoughts — is physiologically costly, chronically engaging the autonomic nervous system. Writing may reduce that chronic activation.
Chronic Pain and Physical Symptoms
A meta-analysis by Frisina, Borod, and Lepore (2004) examined studies on expressive writing in medical populations and found that writing was particularly effective in reducing physical health symptoms in people with pre-existing health conditions. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis and asthma who completed expressive writing protocols showed measurable improvements in symptom severity compared to control groups. The effect wasn’t massive, but it was real and sustained across follow-up assessments.
Why would writing affect pain? One hypothesis involves cortisol regulation. Chronic stress keeps cortisol levels elevated, which increases systemic inflammation. Inflammation is implicated in a wide range of conditions from joint pain to cardiovascular disease. If expressive writing reduces stress-related cortisol burden, the downstream effects on inflammatory processes could be real, even if indirect.
What Doesn’t Work: The Honest Part
Here is where I want to push back against the more breathless corners of the wellness industry. Not all journaling is equivalent, and the research makes this very clear.
Venting Without Processing
Writing that is purely emotional catharsis — essentially transcribing your anger and hurt without any attempt at meaning-making or narrative construction — does not reliably produce benefits and sometimes makes things worse. Studies have found that people who wrote about negative events in a purely expressive, non-reflective style showed temporary mood improvement followed by increased negative affect over subsequent days. The key variable is cognitive processing alongside emotional expression. You need both. Raw emotional discharge alone does not restructure the neural pathways associated with threat appraisal.
Trauma Without Readiness
Writing about severe trauma without adequate psychological support can re-traumatize. Several studies in clinical populations showed that participants with PTSD who were assigned to intensive expressive writing protocols experienced increased distress without the therapeutic containment that face-to-face therapy provides. The 15-minutes-on-paper protocol assumes a certain baseline stability. If you are currently in crisis or dealing with unprocessed acute trauma, journaling alone is not sufficient, and the research supports that position firmly.
Gratitude Journaling Overuse
Gratitude journaling is enormously popular, and the early studies by Emmons and McCullough (2003) showed genuine benefits for wellbeing and life satisfaction. However, subsequent research found an important dose-response problem: people who journaled gratitude three times per week showed greater benefits than those who journaled daily. Writing the same positive observations too frequently habituates you to them, draining their emotional salience. Less is more, and this finding cuts against the common advice to write in a gratitude journal every single morning without exception.
ADHD, Executive Function, and Why Writing Is Especially Valuable for Some Brains
I want to spend a moment on something the mainstream journaling literature doesn’t address directly but that is deeply relevant to me personally and to a non-trivial number of knowledge workers. ADHD affects an estimated 4-5% of adults, and many more adults live with subclinical executive function difficulties that don’t meet diagnostic thresholds but still create real friction in daily life.
Working memory — the cognitive system that holds information in mind while you work with it — is significantly impaired in ADHD and is also vulnerable to chronic stress and sleep deprivation in neurotypical adults. When your working memory is taxed, everything is harder: planning, prioritizing, emotional regulation, maintaining attention.
Journaling functions as an external working memory system. By externalizing thoughts onto paper or a screen, you reduce the cognitive burden of holding those thoughts in active memory. For someone with ADHD, this is not merely useful — it can be functionally transformative. Writing a brain dump before a complex task effectively clears the buffer, much as closing background applications frees up RAM. This is not a metaphor. It reflects the cognitive architecture that neuroimaging studies have been mapping with increasing precision.
Research by Ramirez and Beilock (2011) demonstrated this principle in a performance context: students who wrote about their anxieties for ten minutes immediately before a high-stakes exam scored significantly higher than those who did not. The act of writing offloaded the anxiety from working memory, freeing cognitive resources for the actual task. Knowledge workers dealing with high-stakes presentations, complex analyses, or difficult conversations can apply this same principle directly.
How to Actually Journal Based on the Evidence
Structure Matters More Than Duration
The research does not support marathon journaling sessions. The original Pennebaker protocol used 15 to 20 minutes, and most effective interventions in the literature stay within that window. More important than duration is what you do with that time. Effective evidence-based journaling tends to include three components: describing the situation or emotion concretely, exploring your thoughts and reactions to it, and attempting to find some meaning or perspective — even a tentative one.
You don’t need to resolve anything. You just need to move from pure sensation to some degree of narrative framing. That cognitive shift is where the psychological work actually happens.
The Language Shift Signal
One of the fascinating methodological findings in this field involves linguistic analysis. Pennebaker and colleagues used computer software to analyze the language of journal entries and found that people who showed the greatest health improvements over time showed a specific linguistic pattern: their use of causal words (because, therefore, since) and insight words (realize, understand, know) increased across successive writing sessions. They started with emotional language and gradually shifted toward explanatory language. That shift in language appears to be a marker of the cognitive restructuring process at work.
This means you can use your own writing as a rough diagnostic tool. If you read back through a week of entries and find that you’re using the same emotional vocabulary without any shift toward explanation or meaning-making, that’s a signal that the writing might not be doing the psychological processing work you need from it.
Combining Modalities
Several studies have found enhanced benefits when expressive writing is combined with other practices. Writing followed by brief mindfulness practice — even five minutes of focused breathing — showed additive effects in reducing anxiety compared to either practice alone. For people with ADHD or high cognitive load, the combination of externalizing thoughts through writing and then anchoring attention through breath appears to address two complementary needs: clearing the cognitive buffer and stabilizing the attentional system.
The Honest Bottom Line After 30 Studies
Writing therapy is not magic, and it is not a replacement for professional care when professional care is what the situation requires. But as a low-cost, low-barrier intervention with a credible mechanistic basis and consistent empirical support across more than three decades of research, it deserves to be taken seriously by anyone managing a demanding cognitive life.
The evidence converges on a fairly specific recommendation: write about emotionally significant experiences for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, no more than three or four days per week, with deliberate attention to both the emotional content and your thoughts and interpretations about that content. For anxiety and rumination specifically, scheduled pre-task writing about your worries can free up working memory when it matters most. For longer-term emotional processing, tracking shifts in your language over time gives you real signal about whether the practice is actually moving anything.
For me personally, the shift was not dramatic but it was real. Writing before difficult classes helped me organize the chaos in my head into something my students could actually follow. Writing after stressful faculty meetings reduced the amount of time I spent replaying them at 2 a.m. The science told me why this was happening, and knowing the mechanism made me more consistent about the practice. That’s the advantage of treating your own wellbeing the way you’d treat any other evidence-based question: you stop asking whether you feel like doing it, and you start doing it because the data says it works.

Most decisions feel straightforward in the moment. You send the email, approve the budget, hire the candidate, and move on. The problem is that every action ripples outward in ways that your initial reasoning never accounted for. First-order thinking asks, what happens next? Second-order thinking asks the harder question: and then what?

I started paying serious attention to this distinction after a particularly humbling semester of teaching. I decided to post all my lecture notes online before class, assuming students would come better prepared. They did — and then almost none of them showed up to the actual lectures. My first-order prediction was correct. My second-order blindness was expensive. The consequence I hadn’t traced was that “preparation” and “attendance” were competing, not complementary, behaviors in my students’ minds.
That’s the uncomfortable truth about second-order thinking: it doesn’t require genius. It requires patience with a process that most of us abandon too early because our brains are wired to stop at the first satisfying answer.
Why Your Brain Stops at First-Order
The cognitive architecture behind shallow causal reasoning is well-documented. Kahneman’s dual-process model describes a System 1 that operates quickly, automatically, and with minimal effort, and a System 2 that is slow, deliberate, and effortful (Kahneman, 2011). When you’re evaluating a decision under time pressure — which describes most knowledge work — System 1 dominates. It produces an answer, and the brain registers that answer as satisfactory. The search ends.
This tendency compounds with what researchers call temporal discounting: we systematically undervalue outcomes that occur further in the future relative to immediate ones. A consequence that lands two weeks after your decision feels less real than one that lands two hours later. So not only do we stop tracing causal chains too early, we unconsciously weight distant consequences less even when we do spot them.
There’s also a social component. In most workplaces, being decisive and quick is rewarded visibly, while being thorough and slow is penalized visibly. The knowledge worker who says “let me think through the downstream effects of this policy change” is often perceived as obstructionist, not rigorous. The incentive structure actively pushes against second-order reasoning.
Understanding these pressures isn’t just interesting trivia. If you know your cognition is biased toward speed and toward immediate consequences, you can design deliberate interventions to counteract that bias — rather than simply trying harder to “think better.”
The Architecture of Second-Order Thinking
Second-order thinking isn’t a single technique. It’s a structured habit of extending causal chains before committing to action. The basic framework has three components: consequence mapping, stakeholder tracing, and time horizon expansion.
Consequence Mapping
Consequence mapping means explicitly writing out — not just mentally rehearsing — the causal chain beyond your intended outcome. The act of writing matters. Research on externalized cognition shows that putting reasoning onto paper reduces cognitive load and allows working memory to hold more variables simultaneously (Kirsh, 2010). When you keep the map inside your head, you’re limited by the size of your working memory. When you put it on paper, the page becomes part of your thinking system.
The practice looks like this. State the action you’re considering. Write down the first-order consequence — the most direct and immediate effect. Then, for each first-order consequence, ask: what does this make more likely? and what does this make less likely? Write those second-order effects. Then do it again. Most practical decisions only need two or three levels before you’ve surfaced the consequences that actually matter. Going further than three levels is usually an exercise in creative fiction rather than useful foresight.
The goal isn’t to paralyze yourself with infinite regress. It’s to extend your causal horizon just beyond where it naturally stops. [4]
Stakeholder Tracing
Most first-order thinking is implicitly self-referential. We trace the consequences for ourselves, or for the immediate audience of our decision, and we stop there. Second-order thinking requires asking: who else is in this causal chain? [1]
A product manager who decides to shorten the testing cycle before launch is thinking about shipping speed. The first-order effect is a faster release. But tracing further: a faster release under-tested means more bugs, which means more customer complaints, which lands on the support team, which increases their burnout, which increases turnover, which costs significantly more than the speed advantage was worth. Each step in that chain involves a different stakeholder group. The person who made the original decision never had to face the support team’s workload directly, so they never modeled it. [3]
Stakeholder tracing is a discipline of deliberately asking whose world your decision enters, even when those people aren’t in the room with you. [5]
Time Horizon Expansion
Different decisions have different natural time horizons, and calibrating your analysis to match that horizon is essential. A decision about how to word a single email has a consequence window of days. A decision about organizational structure has a consequence window of years. Most people apply roughly the same analytical depth to both, which means they over-analyze the email and dramatically under-analyze the structural change.
A useful heuristic: the more irreversible a decision is, the further out you need to trace its effects. Reversible decisions can afford shorter analysis because you can correct course. Irreversible decisions — hiring, firing, strategic pivots, policy changes — demand that you look further than feels comfortable.
Where Second-Order Thinking Fails in Practice
There are several predictable failure modes that undermine this kind of reasoning even when people are genuinely trying to apply it.
Stopping at the Obvious Second Order
The most common trap is convincing yourself you’ve done second-order analysis when you’ve only identified one additional consequence — and it happens to be the consequence that confirms your original decision. This is second-order reasoning in the service of motivated reasoning. You trace far enough to feel rigorous, and then you stop exactly where it’s convenient.
The corrective is adversarial questioning. After mapping your causal chain, explicitly ask: what would this look like if my preferred outcome is wrong? Then trace that chain with the same effort. You’re not required to believe the adversarial scenario, but articulating it forces you to engage with consequences you’d otherwise suppress.
Conflating Prediction With Certainty
Second-order thinking is probabilistic, not prophetic. You’re not discovering what will happen; you’re mapping what’s more or less likely given your current understanding. Treating your analysis as a reliable prediction rather than a probability estimate leads to overconfidence, which ironically produces the same errors as not thinking ahead at all.
Research on forecasting accuracy shows that calibrated uncertainty — knowing how confident to be in your estimates — predicts real-world decision quality better than raw intelligence or domain expertise (Tetlock & Gardner, 2015). The habit of attaching rough probability estimates to each consequence in your chain (“this is likely,” “this is possible but uncertain,” “this is a low-probability but high-impact scenario”) builds the kind of calibration that makes your second-order reasoning actually useful rather than just elaborate.
Analysis Paralysis Through Over-Extension
Second-order thinking can become a tool for avoiding decisions rather than improving them. If you extend your causal chains far enough, every outcome becomes uncertain and every action becomes potentially catastrophic. This isn’t rigorous thinking — it’s anxiety dressed up as analysis.
The practical boundary is this: trace consequences to the level of actionable specificity. A consequence is actionably specific if knowing about it changes what you would do, or how you would do it, or what safeguards you would put in place. Once your chains are producing consequences that wouldn’t change your action regardless of their probability, you’ve gone far enough.
Applying This at Work Without Slowing Everything Down
The reasonable objection at this point is that knowledge workers don’t have time to map causal chains for every decision. That’s correct, and it’s not what second-order thinking requires. The skill is knowing which decisions warrant extended analysis and which don’t — and then applying the analysis efficiently to the decisions that do.
A quick triage framework: decisions that are high-stakes, irreversible, or affect people who aren’t in the room deserve explicit second-order analysis. Decisions that are low-stakes, easily reversed, or affect only yourself in the short term usually don’t. Most of the decisions in a typical knowledge worker’s day fall into the second category. The ones that don’t are often the ones we make fastest because they feel urgent.
One practice I’ve found genuinely useful — and I say this as someone whose ADHD makes extended linear analysis feel like running uphill — is the pre-mortem technique. Before committing to a significant decision, assume that twelve months from now the outcome was terrible. Write a paragraph explaining why. This forces consequence tracing in a direction your motivated reasoning resists, and it tends to surface the second and third-order effects that optimistic planning suppresses. Research supports this approach: Klein (2007) found that prospective hindsight — imagining an event has already occurred — increases the ability to identify reasons for future outcomes by approximately 30 percent.
Another approach that works well in team settings is assigning someone the explicit role of consequence tracer in a decision meeting. Their job isn’t to argue against the proposed course of action — it’s to extend every proposed consequence by one additional level and read it back to the group. This externalizes a cognitive process that most groups assume is happening but rarely is.
The Compounding Return of Practicing This Skill
Second-order thinking is one of those capabilities that pays compound interest over time. The more you practice tracing causal chains, the faster and more automatic that tracing becomes. What starts as a deliberate, slow, effortful process gradually becomes a reflex — not because System 1 has learned the skill, but because you’ve trained yourself to pause before System 1 finishes and hands you its answer.
This has meaningful professional implications. Across domains, from management to policy to product development, the people who develop reputations for unusually good judgment are rarely the ones with the most raw intelligence or the most domain-specific knowledge. They tend to be the ones who consistently see consequences that others missed, which allows them to design better interventions, avoid expensive mistakes, and build credibility through demonstrated foresight. Cross-domain research on expertise suggests that pattern recognition in expert decision-makers includes not just recognizing current states, but recognizing the trajectories those states imply (Ericsson & Pool, 2016).
That trajectory recognition is precisely what second-order thinking trains. You’re not learning facts. You’re building a mental habit of following consequences further than your brain naturally wants to go, and doing it often enough that the extended view starts to feel normal.
The honest caveat is that better second-order thinking doesn’t make you immune to being wrong. Causal systems are genuinely complex, feedback loops exist that no analysis will anticipate, and the further out you trace consequences the more your predictions degrade in accuracy. What second-order thinking actually gives you isn’t certainty — it gives you a richer map of the uncertainty you’re operating inside, which is substantially better than the false simplicity of first-order reasoning. You will still be surprised. You’ll just be surprised less often by things you could have anticipated if you’d been willing to look one more step ahead.

Medical school throws somewhere between 10,000 and 30,000 new facts at you depending on which program you attend and which study you believe (Kornell, 2009). That number feels abstract until you’re three weeks into anatomy and your brain starts quietly refusing to distinguish the brachial plexus from a plate of spaghetti. I’ve watched brilliant students with exceptional work ethics fail licensing exams not because they studied too little, but because they studied the wrong way — re-reading, highlighting, passively watching lecture recordings on 1.5x speed and calling it review.

Spaced repetition, implemented through Anki, is the method that actually closes that gap. I say this not as someone who stumbled onto productivity content, but as a teacher with an ADHD brain who has spent years thinking carefully about why some learning strategies work and others feel productive while accomplishing almost nothing.
What Spaced Repetition Actually Does to Your Memory
The underlying mechanism isn’t complicated, but it’s worth stating precisely. Every memory has a forgetting curve — a predictable rate at which it decays after initial encoding. Hermann Ebbinghaus documented this in the 1880s and the basic shape of that curve has held up under modern neuroscience. The key insight is that reviewing information just before you would forget it produces a stronger memory trace than reviewing it when it’s still fresh.
This is counterintuitive. When you review something you remember well, it feels productive. When you review something you’ve nearly forgotten and have to struggle to retrieve it, it feels like failure. But the struggling — what researchers call desirable difficulty — is exactly what drives consolidation (Bjork & Bjork, 2011). Your brain doesn’t strengthen memories by passively receiving information. It strengthens them through the act of retrieval, particularly retrieval that requires genuine effort.
Spaced repetition software like Anki exploits this by scheduling cards algorithmically. Cards you know well get pushed further into the future. Cards you struggle with come back sooner. The SM-2 algorithm that drives Anki’s default scheduler adjusts intervals based on your self-rated performance on each card — rating 1 (Again) resets the interval, rating 4 (Easy) stretches it out significantly. Over time the system builds a personalized schedule that keeps each piece of knowledge just barely above the forgetting threshold.
The result is that you can maintain retention of thousands of facts with far less total study time than traditional review methods require (Cepeda et al., 2006). For medical students working under the particular time pressure of pre-clinical years, this efficiency isn’t a minor advantage. It’s the difference between sustainable learning and chronic exhaustion.
Why Most Students Use Anki Wrong
Anki has a paradox. It’s free, it’s well-documented, it has a massive medical community around it, and yet most students who try it either quit after a few weeks or never get the results they expect. In almost every case I’ve observed, the problem isn’t the tool. It’s the card design.
The Information Dumping Problem
The most common mistake: writing cards that look like condensed lecture notes. Front: “Describe the mechanism of ACE inhibitors.” Back: four sentences covering RAAS, angiotensin II, bradykinin accumulation, efferent arteriole dilation, and clinical indications. This kind of card is a disaster for several reasons.
First, when you review it and get it “right,” you often haven’t actually retrieved all the information — you’ve retrieved enough to feel like you got it right, which is different. Second, when you get it wrong, you don’t know which part of the answer you didn’t know. Third, the card becomes a reading card rather than a retrieval card. You flip it, skim the back, and think “yeah, that.” No effortful retrieval. No memory strengthening.
The fix comes from Michael Nielsen’s principle, derived from cognitive science: minimum information principle. Each card should test exactly one atomic fact. “ACE inhibitors prevent the conversion of __ to __” with the answer “angiotensin I to angiotensin II” is a retrievable card. It tests one thing. Your brain either knows it or it doesn’t.
The Context Collapse Problem
The second common mistake is writing cards without enough context to make them meaningful, then being surprised when the knowledge doesn’t transfer to clinical scenarios. “What drug causes a dry cough?” with the answer “ACE inhibitors” might produce correct answers on Anki while still leaving you unable to explain why to a patient or recognize the clinical significance on an exam vignette.
The solution isn’t to add more text to the card. It’s to write more cards that approach the same concept from different angles. One card for the mechanism. One card for the side effect and its mechanism (bradykinin accumulation). One cloze card embedded in a clinical sentence: “A 58-year-old hypertensive patient on lisinopril develops a persistent dry cough. The responsible mediator is ___.” Now you have three cards building a web of connected knowledge rather than one card that teaches a disconnected fact.
Building a Sustainable Daily Practice
Here’s where I want to be direct about something that most Anki guides avoid: the daily review commitment is the actual hard part. Not the card design, not the settings, not which shared deck to download. Doing your reviews every single day, even when you have an exam, even when you’re tired, even when the count is 400 cards because you missed two days.
The algorithm only works if you show up. A missed day doubles the next day’s reviews. Two missed days and you’re facing a pile that feels impossible, which creates avoidance, which makes the pile larger, which creates more avoidance. I’ve seen students abandon Anki entirely in the middle of exam season because they let their reviews accumulate to 800 cards and couldn’t face it.
The Minimum Viable Session
Set your daily new card limit lower than feels right. Most new Anki users add 50-100 new cards per day because they’re excited and have lectures to cover. Each new card generates roughly 6-10 review cards over the following weeks. Add 80 new cards per day for two weeks and you’ve committed yourself to several hundred daily reviews indefinitely. The math compounds fast.
For pre-clinical medical students, 20-30 new cards per day is sustainable for most people. That’s roughly one solid lecture’s worth of core concepts, stripped of tangential details. Reviews on that volume will stabilize around 150-200 cards per day after a month or two — manageable in about 30-45 minutes if your cards are well-designed.
The minimum viable session rule: even on your worst day, do your reviews. No new cards if you can’t handle them. But reviews always. Ten minutes on your phone between classes counts. The consistency matters more than the session quality.
The Add-New-Cards-After-Lecture Habit
Timing matters more than most students realize. Cards added within an hour of a lecture encode more efficiently because the material is still active in working memory. The act of converting lecture content into Anki cards also forces a level of processing — you have to decide what’s worth knowing, how to phrase it atomically, what context to embed — that passive review of slides never does.
This means carrying Anki into your workflow at the lecture stage, not treating it as a separate study task you do on weekends. Yes, it takes longer than just reviewing slides. But you’re doing cognitive processing that you’d otherwise have to do during study sessions anyway, just worse.
Using Pre-Made Decks Without Losing Your Mind
AnkiMedic, Zanki, Brosencephalon, AnKing — the medical Anki community has produced comprehensive pre-made decks covering First Aid, pathophysiology, pharmacology, microbiology, and more. For licensing exam preparation in particular, these decks are genuinely valuable. AnKing’s UltraZanki deck, for example, contains over 30,000 cards mapped to First Aid and Boards & Beyond, updated regularly by the community.
The risk with pre-made decks is that you start treating Anki like a passive reading task. You flip cards, recognize information, and move on without genuine retrieval. Research on the testing effect is unambiguous: recognition and recall are different processes, and only recall produces durable learning (Roediger & Butler, 2011). If you find yourself “reviewing” 500 cards in 20 minutes, you’re recognizing, not retrieving.
